We are delighted to bring you our first edition of News@CLNZ. We’ve brought together everything that’s important for you to know about our services - whether you’re a licence-holder or a rightsholder or both, or someone who, like us, loves all-things copyright. There’s something here for everyone.
2020 has been a challenging year and we’re looking forward to 2021 and beyond as we continue to expand our services in ways that ensure people who create and people who use copyright can get the best value from those rights. We welcome your feedback! Do get in touch and do let us know what you’d like to see covered in future editions. The CLNZ team wish you all the very best for a safe and happy summer break.

New resources for licence-holders
Each year we introduce new resources to support licence-holders to get the best from their licence and stay compliant with copyright law. In 2020 we were pleased to introduce these free resources:
• A new knowledge base for library staff and others who work with the CLNZ licence • 18 new downloadable copyright fact sheets • New downloadable electronic versions of our printed collateral
| |
New Copyright Basics eLearning module
| |
We now offer two eLearning modules. Our existing module provides an overview of copyright for staff working in primary, secondary, and tertiary education. For 2020 we have added a new module that introduces the CLNZ licence. It is designed to help those working in licensed education institutions to use the licence and stay compliant with copyright law. Both modules are free for all licence-holders and can be embedded in your Learning Management System if you prefer. You can read more about our eLearning courses on our website here. Annual licence updates in 2021
| |
Some of our licence types are subject to annual updates (the exceptions to this are our university, ITP, and wānanga licences). The updating process involves providing us with your organisation’s EFTS (equivalent full-time students) or FTEs (full time employees). In 2021 updates for licences held by PTEs, commercial and government organisations, not-for-profits, charities, associations, and religious organisations will take place in late January. For our primary and secondary school licence-holders, updating will occur mid-year. When it's time for your organisation to provide an update, we'll be in touch via email. If you’d prefer that we contact someone else in your organisation please update us here.

MyCopyright is our self-service portal for New Zealand authors and publishers. We are currently working on expanding our services for rightsholders and adding a range of services for licence-holders as well. Thanks to MyCopyright the process for authors and publishers claiming a distribution of licensing fees is now entirely paper-free. For registered users, notifications of new distributions are instantaneous, and claims can be submitted quickly online. Because the claims process is now more efficient we can run distributions more frequently. Rightsholders can also add new works to MyCopyright to expedite future claims. If you are not yet a MyCopyright user, don’t worry - we’ll be in touch when a new distribution is ready for you with full instructions on how to register. This is just the start for MyCopyright.

MyCopyright has revolutionised the claims process. No more snail-mail, users now have instantaneous notifications, and claims can be submitted quickly and efficiently. As a result, distributions are now being run earlier and more frequently than before. This development has been particularly useful to support authors and publishers during the COVID-19 crisis. The pandemic has disrupted the number of students coming to Aotearoa to study and these fluctuations across the education sector will have an impact on the value of CLNZ's distributions of licensing revenue from the education sector in future years. If you have any questions, just contact Jason Kay.

Giving back through our Cultural Fund
As well as accelerated distributions to rightsholders, this year we have distributed over $240,000 to creators in Aotearoa through the CLNZ Cultural Fund. We have funded a $25,000 Writers' Award awarded to Nick Bollinger and $20,000 of Research Grants were awarded to Fraser Smith, Vasanti Unka, Elizabeth Cox, and Wystan Curnow. In response to the impact of COVID-19 on local creators, an additional $120,000 of Contestable Funding was awarded to 13 projects. Most recently, $75,000 in Contestable Fund Grants were made available to 10 projects that demonstrated national publishing sector growth. You can read more about our awards and grants here.

Creative Rights = Creative Reads campaign
We're working with the New Zealand Society of Authors and the Publishers Association of New Zealand to put creative rights and their importance – for writers, the local book sector, and for our country – in the spotlight. Creative Rights = Creative Reads is a campaign to help New Zealanders understand why creative rights like copyright are so important; how these rights underpin the success of Aotearoa New Zealand’s book sector; and how valuing creative rights contributes to the country’s social, economic and cultural wellbeing. Review of the Copyright Act
The review of the Copyright Act continues. Whether you’re a creator of copyright works or work in an organisation that makes use of copyright materials, the outcome of the review may affect you. We encourage you to keep an eye on the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment's (MBIE) website for the latest developments. You can read more about this here.

Working for New Zealand visual artists
Multiple income streams are vital in the creative sector and CLNZ has been working on growing the opportunities for new sources of revenue for Aotearoa’s artists. In 2020, this has included steps towards licensing the use of art works for the marketing purposes of auction houses and their vendors, and engagement with Manatū Taonga (Ministry of Culture and Heritage) on an Artists’ Resale Royalty Scheme.
Discussions with the auction houses are ongoing and, at the time of preparing this newsletter, the Ministry’s work programme for the Resale Royalty Scheme is being reconsidered in light of the COVID-19 recovery priorities. In 2021 we’ll be talking further with artists about how CLNZ’s services can be developed and enhanced to meet their needs. We're encouraging New Zealand visual artists to register with us, which can be done on our website here.

An update on licence exclusions
Sometimes rightsholders choose to exclude works from our licences. Updates to our exclusions list are made quarterly and you can check the list of exclusions on our website anytime.
